A new hardware often appears to have a number of problems. A manufacturing defect has affected a small number of Apple’s iPhone 5s devices.
According to a small number of iPhone 5s owners, there are some problems with their iPhone 5S causing shortened battery life and longer charging times.
The iPhone 5s, which went on sale in September, is rated for up to 10 hours of battery life on 3G and 250 hours of standby time.
Apple itself has confirmed to The New York Times that this time around some iPhone 5S users are suffering from poor battery performance.
“We recently discovered a manufacturing issue affecting a very limited number of iPhone 5S devices that could cause the battery to take longer to charge or result in reduced battery life,” said Teresa Brewer, an Apple spokeswoman. “We are reaching out to customers with affected phones and will provide them with a replacement phone.”
Apple refused to elaborate on the specific manufacturing flaw, but the company seems to be sure, the issue isn’t related to a defective battery. The company also did not specify how many smartphones are affected by the issue, though as The New York Times noted, Apple’s statement suggests that only a few thousand owners may be suffering from battery life issues out of several million. The Times also says that a defective battery is not the same thing as a “manufacturing issue,” adding that bad components aren’t necessarily to blame.
After the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 5c debuted earlier this fall, Apple said that the total number of sold devices reached nine million devices, but did not break the sales number down further.
Apple has already faced a number of battery-related issues, the most recent being an unexpected shutdown issue with some MacBook Pro and MacBook Air laptops. That time the company offered a firmware update to solve the problem, though the iPhone 5s situation seems to be hardware related.
